Op 7 november, de tweede dag van Blowup: New Materials, New Methods, zijn in er V2_ Rotterdam, nieuwe gesprekken over denken, innovatie, kunst en wetenschap. Centraal staat de rol van nieuwe materialen.
Op het podium zal kunstenaarsduo Driessens & Verstappen door kunsthistorica en journalist Boukje Cnossen geïnterviewd worden over het gebruik van techniek in kunst. Naar aanleiding van hun werk heeft onderzoeker en kunstrecensent Boukje Cnossen het kunstkritiekproject De Vuurlinie het essay Wildgroei en vreemde ogen geschreven. .
Jan Jongert, één van de oprichters van het Rotterdamse architectenbureau Superuse Studios geeft een inkijk van hun innovatieve projecten. Tot slot is er een een re-enactment van een lezing van de Britse denker en schrijver C.P. Snow over de kloof tussen kunst en wetenschap. Deze wordt nagespeeld door kunstenaar en onderzoeker Giles Lane.

Robots are taking our jobs, we are told in every newspaper. We live in a time of an ever-increasing outsourcing of human labour to robots and computers. You would think that creativity and artistic production are still exclusively reserved to human beings, but artists Driessens & Verstappen disagree. What happens if artists leave the making of art up to machines? How does this challenge our perceptions of what art is ? What other possibilities for outsourcing creativity does this work trigger? Driessens & Verstappen will discuss these issues in an on stage interview with art critic Boukje Cnossen, who wrote the essay Proliferating Plants and Strange-Looking Eyes for De Internet Gids on the artists’ most recent work. In this essay she asks what would happen if we took the artistic abilities of self-generating systems seriously. She argues that the power of Driessens & Verstappen’s work is in confronting the viewer with the limits of their own systems of looking and interpreting.
This talk is part of the evening programme New Materials, New Methods organised by V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media. Is experimenting with new materials an art or a science? What is the difference between creativity and innovation? New materials and new methods are needed to forge the future, and it will happen at the intersection of art and science. A central role in this programme is given to the legacy of Geoffrey Pyke, eccentric British inventor from the 1940s who invented the material Pykrete. Eindhoven-based designers Roel Pluijman and Jorrit Hijl recently used his invention to build their Pykrete Dome and will report on the endeavour. Also part of the evening is a re-enactment of C.P. Snow’s famous lecture, The Two Cultures, by Giles Lane as well as a talk by Jan Jongert, Head of Research at Superuse Studios.
